Award-Winning Animal Portraits
Amy Fernandez is both a breeder and an artist
and from her animal portraits, it is clear that the two are firmly entwined in her
lifestyle. Since 1983 she has worked as a professional portrait and wildlife artist, and
has completed over 100 commissioned portraits. She is represented in The Dog Museum and is
a regular exhibitor at the "Art Show at the Dog Show", as well as the
Contemporary Dog Artists Exhibition. She has bred and shown the hairless breeds Chinese
Crested and Xoloitzcuintli, and has just published a book about hairless dogs. Amy
believes animal portraiture is essentially a process of discovery. The artist not only
seeks to achieve an accurate likeness, but must also reveal the subject's intangible
qualities. A successful portrait will combine the elements of realism, simplicity,
personality, and a confident artistic style.
